Are students attending the lectures and paying attention?
Is there a way to encourage accountability among my students?
How can I offer extra credit that doesn’t drastically increase my workload?
To address these questions, I created the Bonus Quiz. It’s a trifecta of an assignment that encourages active participation, promotes accountability, and provides an easy to grade bonus assignment. After each lecture students take a short quiz over its contents and if the quiz average is high enough, they receive bonus points on an exam. As a socialized form of extra credit, the quiz averages are calculated based on the performance of the whole class instead of the individual.
